Slurry Injection – A Primer
Waste is all around us and is a challenge that will continue to increase exponentially as the world’s population and commercial development continue to grow. While traditional methods of waste management are still in use today, the management of complex, carbon-bearing waste is something that requires a deeper understanding.
Unlike traditional waste, that can be recycled or left to biodegrade over time, complex waste, or waste that is a combination of solid and liquid matter, requires a little more care to ensure its proper disposal, especially when it finds its way into sensitive environments such as inhabited communities and their water sources. If left unmanaged, complex waste can have catastrophic consequences.
For over a quarter of a century, people have used slurry injection as a standard practice for managing complexe waste in environmentally sensitive regions such as offshore areas, tundras, marshes, and remote areas.
Complex wastes that would otherwise be left to sit in a reserve pit, land farm, or be discharged into the ocean, can be permanently and safely sequestered in deep underground geologic formations by way of slurry injection. Using hydraulic fracturing technology, subsurface fissures are used to trap solid wastes and remove them from the biosphere forever.
